"Life on Mars" ENDING

By the time the last episode arrives, we’re confident that Sam has been in a coma. Now we learn that a brain tumor is the root cause. Sam believes this malignant growth is embodied by his rogue boss Gene Hunt (Guv), and he decides to collude with Guv’s superior to bring him down, which in turn will allow his body to recover.

In a secondary plot, Sam and the team embed themselves in a burglary gang and, when the bad guys learn this, a deadly firefight ensues. In the midst of the shooting, Sam escapes by willing himself back to 2006. There, he quickly realizes how boring his life is and how much he has become used to, and enjoys, the 1970s. In an attempt to get back to 1973, Sam leaps off of the roof of the police station (shades of VANILLA SKY) and arrives back in 1973 just in time to save the team.

In the final scene, the team drives off, with Sam and Guv bickering as usual. Children run past, including a young girl who has appeared in a number of episodes, visible only to Sam. She looks directly into the camera before reaching out and "switching off" the TV that the viewer is watching, signifying that the story has come to an end.

Series writer Matthew Graham wrote the scenario to indicate that Sam is now in the afterlife, but acknowledges that the ending is ambiguous and open to other interpretations, including the possibility that everything we’re seeing is occurring in Sam’s comatose mind.
